PERKY LITTLE PENNY |

Perky, little Penny, Playing in the yard, Didn't know what was coming, Or the gate she would have barred. Old Sammy turtle, Mosseying down the street, Looking for a kind face, Hoping one to meet, Stopped by to see her, To tell her all his woes, And without his meaning to, He stepped upon her toes! Now Sammy is a big guy, He weighs two hundred pound, And when he stepped on Penny's foot She made a mighty sound! She squeaked, and she squawked Then she let out such a roar That the whole town came a running, Her father closed his store! They tried to calm the little girl Who wouldn't stop her crying, But even though they begged and pleaded, It was no use trying. |
|
Because perky, little Penny Was mighty, mighty mad, She wasn't used to hurting And her temper had been had. |

But Sammy had an idea, He stooped and kissed her toe, He gave a quick apology And then he turned to go. "I won't come back, I promise you, Dear Penny, oh my friend! "And then he left as fast as glue With Penny on the mend! At first she just stared after him With tears still in her eyes Then suddenly she called to him To everyone's surprise! "Don't go!" she cried. "It wasn't your fault, I wanted someone to blame! But accidents just happen, It wasn't why you came!" "You needed a smile, a happy face, Someone to make you glad! And I'm the one who smiles the best Unless you make me mad!" Her words made Sammy turn around, To look her in the eye. And when he saw her standing there He let out one, big sigh! "Still friends!" he cried With relief and a grin. "You've surely made my day! There isn't anyone better I know Than you, dear Penny, I say!" From that day forward their friendship grew, Old Sammy always bringing a flower. And Penny learned kindness and how to forgive And she never again turned sour! PS: "Just watch where you're walking there, Sammy!"
